How To Do A Year Ahead Tarot Spread: Two Easy Methods

Everyone wants to know what the future has in store for them and tarot readings can be very helpful for this.

As humans, we all want to know what we can expect so that we can capitalise on all the opportunities and prepare ourselves for any challenges.

year ahead tarot spread

Every year, when new year’s day is near, people start looking back at what they have achieved during the past year and what they can look forward to in the new year.

If you happen to do this too, you can do a year-ahead tarot spread.

Although tarot readings can’t predict your future entirely, they can certainly give you a lot of insights into how your future might unfold based on where you’re at right now.

I do a New Year’s tarot spread for myself every year and they have been scarily accurate the past few years.

Let’s get into how you can do your own.

How To Do A Year Ahead Tarot Spread

In order to get a comprehensive understanding of where you’ve been, where you are now, and where your path leads, I will talk about a 7-card spread which you can do as a New Year’s tarot spread.

This will provide you with a bird’s eye view of your journey, and you’ll have the chance to correct your course if that’s what you want.

So, let’s take a look at how to do a new year tarot spread.

1) Choose A Deck

If, like me, you have multiple decks of cards, choose the one you’re most comfortable with or the one that calls you at that time.

Just let your heart decide. If you only have one deck, that’s not a problem. Simply proceed to the next step.

I usually use my Rider Waite deck when doing a tarot spread for the New Year, but I also layer with oracle cards to enhance the meaning. Just do what feels right for you.

2) Shuffle Your Cards

Before doing any reading, shuffling your tarot cards is a must.

This helps establish a connection between the cards and your higher self.

It also gives you an opportunity to program the cards with your intention.

So, while you’re shuffling your cards, you can tell them to show you what the future holds for you.

3) Draw And Reflect

Now, for this spread, you’ll need to draw out 7 cards.

So, after you’ve shuffled the cards, you can start drawing your cards, looking at them, reflecting upon them, and keeping them face up in front of you. Let’s start.

tarot spread for the new year

First Card: Past Achievements

While drawing out this card from the deck, focus on the past year.

After all, this first card will go over what you have already achieved in the recent past.

It might also tell you about certain failures or obstacles you didn’t cross.

Try to link this card with your intentions for the future.

For example, if you get an eight of cups card, it might be telling you that you abandoned your long-term goal in the past year.

If that’s the case, you need to decide whether that goal is meaningful to you or not. If it is, you should definitely pursue it again.

Second Card: Expectations For The Future

In your tarot spread for the new year, this is perhaps the most important card. After all, it sets the core theme for what you can expect for the new year. While drawing this card out, think about what you want to achieve in the next year. Think about your desires and wishes. Then read the card and reflect upon the message. Maybe you’ll get a “Ten of Pentacles,” which suggests that there are great accomplishments and success ahead!

Third Card: Expected Challenge

We all know that challenges are inevitable in life. It’s just the way it is.

So, it’s better to have insights into the potential challenges we might face and prepare for them.

This card is aimed at doing that.

So, while drawing out this card, think about what obstacles you might face in the New Year.

Then, read the card and analyze its meaning.

Fourth Card: Harnessing Your Inner Power

Now that you have some sense of the challenges, it is time to learn how you can address them.

And that can be done by learning how to harness your inner power.

As wise people always say, the solutions to all your problems are within you. It’s just a matter of discovering them.

So, think about your inner power while drawing out this fourth card.

It will shine a light on your strengths and latent abilities. It can even lay down a path toward finding a solution.

Fifth Card: Lessons From The Past

We keep learning new lessons every year. These lessons make you wiser and a much better version of yourself.

While looking at the next year, it is also important to reflect upon the lessons from the past.

Sometimes, these lessons can form a bridge between you and your future dreams.

For example, the lessons you learned this year about investing money could help you invest in all the right places in the New Year.

So, while drawing out the fifth card, focus your mind on your past learnings.

Sixth Card: Actions To Take

This is another important card as it tells you about the concrete actions you can take in the new year so that you can achieve your dreams and goals.

So, when you are pulling this card out, tell the cards, “Please tell me what course of action I can take toward my dreams.”

Then, analyze the meaning of the card and take the message to heart.

Seventh Card: The Big Picture

Your goals, challenges, lessons, and plans are parts of your life. However, they are not your entire life.

This is where this card comes into play. It gives you the big picture of your life which helps you find clarity.

It tells you how everything fits with each other to complete the jigsaw puzzle of your life.

With this thought in mind, pull out the final card of the new year’s eve tarot spread.

After you are done with the reading, spend some time with yourself and go over the different cards again if you have to.

Make this a meaningful experience and work out a plan keeping the messages of the cards in mind.

Doing A New Year’s Eve Tarot Spread: Another Method

I often do my year ahead tarot readings on New Year’s Eve. As such, I find it helpful to do a month-by-month method.

This is super easy to do. Shuffle your cards and choose 12 that you are drawn to.

Place the cards down in a linear order. They will represent January to December.

Read the cards month by month to understand what might be in store.

It can be helpful to make a note of the key takeaways from each month ahead as it’s an awful lot to remember otherwise.
